Have a Barking Problem? Please Tell Me About It

Right now I’m putting the finishing touches on a presentation I’ll be doing next week to help you stop your dog’s barking.

I’ve got a lot of great tips and techniques that are SUPER effective at putting a stop to dog barking dog FAST!

But to make this presentation even stronger, I want to hear about your most pressing barking problem that you want help fixing.

This presentation is for you and so I want to make sure it covers the types of barking that YOU struggle with, and I don’t want to leave anything out.

I want to know what causes your dog to bark, what have you tried to stop it… and what have you tried already that hasn’t worked.

I’ll then take the top 10 main barking issues and create a step-by-step outline for you to follow on how to eliminate each type of barking that you struggle with.

So please post a comment to this blog post describing the type of barking you’d like me to help you fix.

Then make sure you sign up to be on our announcement list when we release this barking presentation to the public by filling out your name and email address in this form below.

Fill out this form if you want me to notify you when my Stop Barking Program is released sometime next week:

  2. greg Says:

One of our dogs barks at night for unknown reasons. I believe he smells a cat. He is a Shitsu/poodle cross and very territorial. When he does I get up in the middle of the night, clamp his jaw a bark back at him with No Bark No Bark No Bark. And he stops. He knows he’s been naughty because he runs away from me when I rouse on him. It would be nice if he stopped permanently.
He also barks at other dogs in the street and visitors. I think this is territorial as well. He also goes ape when he smells a cat.

  3. Gilly Says:

I have four dogs. A16 yr old Westie, 14yr old Whippett Mix, 12yr old Bijorn and a 7 tr old Rat Terrier/Chiachuaua and they are a barking chrous. They ALL bark when the see golfer’s on the golf couse through the fence. They all bark when someone/animal goes past the front window on the street. They ALL bak when people come to visit or when my sister and come and/or leave. The older two are deaf now so when the realize thet the Bijon and my Terrier bark they follow. I have tried, whistles then reward with praise and a dog cookie. I have tried a firm,”No bark” followed with praise and a cookie. I tried to ignore the dog chorus and all in all each each has worked temporarily. I hate to keep the front blinds closed and would rather control them and not the blinds. They two little ones also bark when we have company and our company simply stand up in our house. I have never used punhishment myself, but sometimes out of frustraion my sister will yell at them to try to stop them. I prefer priase when/if the stop barking when I ask them too. Also, I had asked for your free training program through your web-site, through email and have not been able to open and view it.

My dog is a months old staff x pitbull and is such a lovley dog but the barking is becoming a bit of a problem, more so when she cant get to other dogs not necessarily to fight but she does like to play rough and this frigtenms the other dog owners especially when she is growling and and screming she is creating a problem and will not stop until the other dog is completly out off sight

  6. Jill Says:

I have a 2yr old boxer that barks at everything. He barks when someone comes to the door, actually it starts when they come up the driveway and gets worse when they get to the door. He barks at people walking down the street and is worse if they are walking a dog. As soon as you put him outside he runs and barks to say hi everyone I am here. He barks at noises in the house. Just one very vocal boxer.
I have tried the clicker, water sprayed in his face from a bottle, newspaper and we bought a stop barking collar. He still barks with the collar only when he gets schocked he will go yip, yip, yip. Needless to say I don’t waste money on batteries anymore. I’ve tried following him around when he is barking and pulling up on his collar and saying a firm no but he dosen’t stop. He thinks that is his cure to start jumping at me.
Don’t know what else to do.

  7. Angie Says:

Hi. I am having a problem with my dog barking when she hears the neighbour’s dogs begin to bark. This is a recent development in a seven year old dog of mixed heritage. Previously she would only bark if there was someone on the premises or at the gate, but now whenever the neighbour’s unruly dogs bark at butterflies she will join in. I have tried sending her to her bed which has mixed results, I have tried spraying her with water also with mixed results. I am reluctant to punish her for barking as I do not want her to think that she may never bark. I just want her to return to barking only when there is need.

  8. Robyn Faravoni Says:

Whenever they think they hear something in the back yard OR another dog is barking up the street

  9. Pat Worthington Says:

I “dogsit” a couple of dogs regularly that upon hearing a strange (to them) sound – start barking. They keep barking even though I tell them that that is enough barking. It seems that once started – they just keep barking, My dog, actually, does stop so this problem only happens with “other people’s dogs”. But since they are with me quite often, I am the one who wants it to stop.

  10. Trish Says:

Well im cheating!!Sorry, my dog does not Bark unnecissarily, but I have been trying to get a way to ask you to pleeeeeeeeeez tell me why my dog digs holes on the lawn, its normally when im not here, that does tell me something, but……….how do I stop it!!! my garden is ruined.
He is a Labrador, 7 years old, we just moved to Australia, didnt do before.
I tend to take him to hole a do my usual screeming stunt, and get that BLANK LOOK AS IF TO SAY WHATS YOUR PROBLEM. I love him, he is always inside joined to my hip.

  11. Debbie Simnes Says:

    Hi,

My dog barks when she is outside all the time . She barks at anything, eveything and sometimes nothing. We have tried to say Quiet and also go outside with her to keep her quiet. If we let her out on her own (when it’s really cold here -40) as soon as she is out the door she barks. When she plays she barks but it is a different kind of bark, sharper and not as loud. She is a very vocal dog. She’ll also dothings like put her ball in a place that’s hard to get to and then bark at it. I am sure our neighbours just love her.

Any help would be appreciated. All Barked out!

  12. Lynn Bradley Says:

My dog goes nuts when we get out of the car and leave her in it. She gets so worked up that the car vibrates from her lunging up agains the windows and sides of the car. We’ve had her for almost two years and she still doesn’t get it that we’ll return for her. she goes practically everywhere with us. We only leave her alone in the car when we go into a grocery store or stop for gas or other places where dogs aren’t allowed, She’s only a barker in the car. People walking by the house don’t bother her. she barks when the door bell rings but otherwise she is very quiet.

  13. Barbara Morrison Says:

    My dog barks:

I have an 8 month blue tick who barks constantly at the kids that live next door. We have a fenced in yard so she has plenty of room. She sometimes will bark for 1/2 hour straight, stop for 10-15 mintes and then start all over again. My neighbors haven’t complained yet but it does get annoying

  15. hannah Says:

We have 2 daschunds — both boys – both rescued and both fabulous and exceptionally special & loving.
Muffin who is now 10, barks at the kitchen door when he wants a biscuit and does not give up until he succeeds or the door is closed.
Nutmeg who is about 2, is a noisy little guy who barks constantly when he hears the neighbours kids playing. If you call him to come inside, he is really good and listens but if you leave him alone , he can drive one up the wall with his barking. He may be small but thinks he is a Rotweiller and barks like one !!

  17. Mary Robinson Says:

We have a Aussie Terrier, now 10 months old, and since we got him as a small pup he has barked and whinned whenever out of our presence. Being outside he is at his worst, to the point that we have recently had council complaints about it. We have tried a water gun, with little effect, a anti bark collar which emits sound or vibrates but it has little effect, thrown chains at the door, he takes three steps back and approaches again. WE do love him, and generally its not a problem to be inside, but there are times when this is not appropriate. Please. Also used praise and small treats when he is behaving.

  18. Jean Says:

I have 4 Australian Shepherds and we live in the country on the Big Island of Hawaii. They have created a game where they run down the driveway/or over the acre to bark at cars & people who might be driving/walking by. But this is not really the problem – its just some background.
The problem is my youngest red Aussie. She barks at any man who enters our yard/house (even my husband) and will not stop barking like the other 3 dogs will. She has to continue on a good 20 barks before I can get her to be quiet. She is not as bad in public (like agility, or parks, or malls, etc).
I have tried the quiet, calm, assertive, method – not working.
Hope you can help me out.

  19. Laurie Says:

My 5 month old Sheltie barks like crazy when we get in the car. I have tried crating him, front seat, back seat, clicking and treating the brief silence, shaking a can of pennies, squirting him with water. I have taken him in the car every day since I brought him home. (approx 3 months) He comes to work with me. The thing is, he wants to go, but then changes into this wild thing when we get in the car. Let me tell you, just a short trip can feel like an eternity if you have a high pitch bark ringing in your ear!

  20. Karen Says:

    Chet,
My female brindle pit has 2 barking issues.
    1. When someone comes to the door she gets herself all worked up, barking, running around and panting until she sees who is there.
    2. When she’s out in the back yard, she just randomly barks and squirrels, birds and people that may not even be near our yard.
It’s quite embarrasing as we can’t stand it when someone elses dog in the neighborhood is barking and we don’t want her barking.
I bought a collar that let out a small beep to keep her from barking and she is mortified of it. When I put it on her, not only won’t she bark but she won’t stay outside anymore. She becomes the most submissive and not herself dog. So I have not been putting that on her.

  21. Laura Woodfine Says:

My dogs bark at every thing..lol
If a car pulls in to visitors parking in front of my house, if their is a squirrel in the back yard, if their are kids playing behind the fence on the other side of the back yard, and last but not least when some one walk by or comes up to the door.
Sometimes thy bark and know one is around a if they had seen something that we haven’t.
It get trying after a while trying to keep them quite especially when i have gotten the baby down for a nap and they start.
I hesitate opening blinds and keeping my front door open during the day so that i could have some quite.
I almost cant keep then in the backyard for any length of time except for a pee because they bark and then i get complaints from my neighbours
Well that’s the story of my dogs..
I cant tell you why they are barking all i can say is that they sure make it known that they are here.

    Thanks
    Laura Woodfine

  22. Leonid Says:

My dog, 6 years old female, Kerry Blue Terrier is barking on other dog(i assume she’s protecting in this case), on small animals running on the backyard, and on the people walking on the street when she see them thru the window.

  23. Chcuk Cotter Says:

Barking when she doesn’t get her way at doing something and barking at any bird that passes by her sight or fence

  24. georgina Says:

My dog is brill for barking when someone walks or drives up the drive.
However, when people come to the door and want to come in, I tell her its ok and for her to stop barking but she just barks and barks. I always make sure she does not meet new people in a small space as she is a nervous dog and I have a small bottle of gravel that works a treat to stop her barking if I shake it near her
In public she never barks at people who have dogs with them but with no dogs she will bark at everyone. Luckily we see few people on our walks as we live in the middle of nowhere so it is not too inconvenient but she is quite embarrassing and scarey for those who do not have dogs or know about them
she would never hurt a fly and would lick a burglar to death, and as she is white labrador people do not stay worried about her for too long as she is sooooooo gorgeous!!
I wonder why she barks and more annoyingly why she does not want to stop after i have reassured her that i know the person or that they are not there to hurt us????
    Thanks

    HI
In your email you ask for comments on dogs barking
there is rarely rhyme or reason for either my dogs barking. if we sit infront of tv and have dinner they both just bark their heads off
Both dogs are hunting dogs, the older ( 2 yrs ) of the 2 never barked when we first rescued him now because the younger ( 10 months old )
barks no matter what the older has joined in. Sadly we had to purchase 2 barking collars which while on ( even with dead battery ) the younger has stopped barking. The older doesnt mind the collar and barks if we sit on sofa and cuddle.
Both dogs bark at my vaccumn , my mop, or just my shoe

In past I have NEVER had problems stopping my dogs from such bad behavior. Both of these dogs have sooo many issues in behavior since we got the male.

Female always came when called and now just runs in yard or will sit immediately and then run the second you take a step toward

I finally have the male to listen when i say heal he will come and stand by my right side. If my husband says it he starts to bark and refuse

We are nearly at wits end with both.

These dogs are cage trained as I cannot trust them if I am working online and am unable to keep an eye out on them. She will steal and chew things and he will try to get it from her and bring it to me . but then decides it more fun to chase after her and have tug o war. inwhich he will bark.

Here is hoping you can use this information

I have 4 dogs. When one starts barking, they ALL bark. Especially when the doorbell rings – even if it’s on TV! They bark if trucks go by or they bark when they look out the back porch and see people going into their storage sheds. Or if they hear other dogs barking. We’re constantly trying to shush (is that a word?) them. Help!

  28. Susan Kleckner Says:

My two dogs bark at anything they see:people walking their dog, birds, squirrels, unusual noises in the building. They bark at my cats. They are dachshunds, so I expect a certain amount of barking. They set each other off. I don’t want to rearrange my furniture or shade my front window, just so they can’t see out. I have sprayed them with water, yelled, held their muzzles closed, nothing works.Help!

Have a 4 1/2 yr-old Chihuahua male who barks when anyone comes to the door or enters the house (even when he knows them).

I have tried about everything I know to do, such as squirt water or command “Stop” pointing a finger; “No Bark”. I have to pick him up to cease the bark, but he will still do a low growl in my arms for a time.

I realize he is being “protective” of our space, but this is very annoying and inconvenient. If I dare take the time (before answering the door) to catch him and hold him, I have sometimes nearly lost the caller at my door! Please help me; thanks. Linda

    1) We have 16 Cavaliers who run loose in our house. When we had only 3, we had no barking problem. With 16, it takes only one to get them all barking. So, how do you train a herd to stop barking?
    2) When our Cavaliers anticipate any daily routine about to happen, the barking begins. Again, how do you go about training a large group to stop barking?
    3) Most of our Cavaliers only bark with purpose. But, we do have one who barks spontaneously, with no identifiable purpose.
    4) We have one Cavalier who is wary of strangers and barks ferociously to scare them away. This is atypical for the breed.

  36. Shirley Bignell Says:

My youngest dog Gypsy, 15 months, barks when she gets excited and especially when I let them out of the car at the park, she wants to let everyone know she is ready to play. She does bark at home at times and I stop her with a squirt bottle, but in the park she is too far away to use the same technique. I feel that I may have inadvertantly rewarded her at the wrong times, knowing that timing is critical, and so am not able to stop this behavior now. I take her and the other two to dog obedience classes, but of course this problem is not addressed because it does not happen there.

I would like help with my dog barking at anything she sees that is unfamiliar to her: new people, new shoes I’m wearing, trash that blows into the yard… anything!! The biggest problem, however, is people… she hates all people that she does not know and will bark until they are out of sight. Barking at animals is also an issue, but not nearly as big of a problem.

    I have 2 dogs – one is a 5lb chi, the other is a 20lb mixed bread.

My mixed breed dog barks at the slightest little noise outside. She has a really shrill bark. Additionally, when someone comes to the door, such as a delivery man, not only does she sound a “warning bark” or two but she continues barking no matter what. I have worked with an excellent dog behaviorist who has helped us w/many issues but this one remains a problem. She is so focused on the door we cannot seem to get her attention. And if the doorbell is run, it is a sprint for the door accompanied by incessant barking. Help :)

  46. merna Says:

my dog barks for attention, barks when he sees a shadow, at everyone and thing going down the road, at squirrels, birds, you name it he barks at it .
I use a muzzle as it stops it for abit. All I have to say is do you want me to put your muzzle on, then he comes and sits in front of me so I can put it on, then he slumps down and pouts till I take it off, then a couple minutes after it’s off he is right back to barking.
How do I get PJ to not bark in the house as I have my business in my home and it disrupts my clients and I don.t want them to think this muzzle is a permanent fixture on PJ’s face? I do not want to use the shock bark collar, I tried it and it is cruel and inhumane.
PJ is just a little bichon. We walk him and play with him, he has his toys and treat ball but he still has extra energy for his barking all the time and now he has even started peeing in the house when I am not there even after ai have taken him for his walk and pee time.

  47. Tanya Newton Says:

    Good morning,

We have two boxers. The first one was a female and never barked. The only time she did bark was if someone kept banging on the door, and we didn’t answer. So when we got our second boxer, and he started barking when playing, or not getting attention, we found it cute for the first week or so. Well we quickly learned that we had to nip it in the bud. Which he has gotten much better. However, when ever there is someone who walks by the house, or if we are out for a walk and there is another dog around, or if he is chasing our other dog while playing, he reverts back and starts barking. When we are on the walks, it is hard to keep his attention to sit and stop barking (which is the technique we have used, sit and stay for 15 seconds with no barking, then lots of praise). Also when he is wound up and chasing our other dog, again it is hard to stop him. When staring out the window and there is someone walking by (and actually with all the snow we are getting now, he is starting to bark at front end loaders and overly large trucks that make lots of noise), we have a little more control on the situation, but none of our regular efforts work.

Hopefully you can offer some suggestions. We are really hoping our oldest does not start picking up on this barking habbit. They say old dogs can not learn new trucks, but trust me, “Monkey see, Monkey do”

Thanks again for all your help and great e-mails.

  56. Carol Barber Says:

We adopted a severly abused Blood Hound 6 months ago. We are making progress with her starting to trust us but it’s been a long slow process & we probably have a longer way to go. When she is upset, she starts to bark/howl and will not quit. If someone comes over, which happens a lot because I have a business in my home, she will bark/howl the entire time they are here. She also will bark in her loud howling just because she’s mad. When I try to go outside and catch her to come inside so she won’t get us kicked out of our neighborhood she will really get mad and non stop bark. One night I tried to catch her for two hours and finally at 12:30 am I got her cornered to go into the garage but she barked the entire time. If I leave her outside to come in by herself, she’ll continually bark and you can tell she’s really mad. She even barks in the house and we don’t know what she’s barking at. She has some severe emotional problems but her loud howling/barking is driving us and the neighbors insane. Please help us!!!

  57. Dog Mom Says:

I have a Min-Pin who goes spastic whenever she hears a loud sound… anything from rain hitting the skylights, thunder, firecrackers, etc. If I let her out in the rain, she literally tries to attack the sky.. jumping up and barking into the air! The only thing I’ve found to quiet her is to put a towel or small blanket over her and hold her close to me. This is quite often inconvenient as I can’t always “baby-sit” her through an entire storm! The bark is aggressive with snarls and growls accompanied by non-stop barking.

  58. Lisa Says:

My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel barks like crazy when he sees anyone walking outside. He really barks when he sees someone walking another dog. I just yell his name to stop and he usually does after I’ve yelled at him a few times.

They are inside dogs, thank goodness, because otherwise it would be none stop all day long. When I also had two beagles (they have both passed away), the minute they would come outside the 4 dogs would run up and down the length of the fence barking and howling like it was a fox hunt. I used barking collars, squirting them with the hose, bribbing them with treats, everything I could think of and I could not get them to stop all the ruckus. Right now our Bloodhound ignors all of their barking but I’m afraid that once she really feels comfortable here, she’s going to start joining in with the two noisey beagles. When the other two dogs won’t stop, how do you get your dog to not participate? Is there anything I can do to get the neighbors dogs to quit barking? Going insane & don’t want my dog to join the crowd!!!

I have a 12 month chocolate lab that barks at everything when he is in the back yard. A person walking on the sidewalk on the other side of the street is barked at, pretty much anything. We have tried muzzle training, 20 min on, 20 min off, he’s a really smart dog and we figured as soon as he realized it’s the barking we don’t want he’d stop but he hasn’t. He knows he’s not supposed to do it becuase as soon as we open the door to silence him he hangs his head and tucks his tail between his legs but when the door shuts he’s back to barking. He also barks at strangers, I like that he’s not super warm but he’s a big dog with a scary bark and I feel horrible when people are scared of him. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!

I have a purebread 1 1/2 yr.old Yorkshire Terrior who barks everytime someone comes up from downstairs. My son-in-law and daughter(2-children) live in our basement. The basement door creaks when opened and the second he hears that door he barks non-stop which causes my 6 yr.old terrior/chihuahua to bark also. When someone knocks on the door or they hear noises outside they both start barking loudly. Also, when we let them out side for potty trips, our Yorkie will stand outside playing tug of war with his leash and barking loudly. Our terrior usually stops when scolded but the Yorkie just continues to bark. We have tried a barking collar on our Yorkie but quit after the first time because we felt it was cruel. We have also tried giving him a light smack on the butt. This does not work either. We are lost and do not know what else to try. This has to stop because we love him to death but he is driving us nuts. Please Help!

  63. Louise Says:

Our dogs bark in the backyard- we can’t leave them out at all. The neighbors have been patient, but they’re getting frustrated. We have a path that runs behind our house, the dogs bark (and bark and bark) at everyone who goes by. They also bark when our neighbors are in their yards. Our 1 yr. old lab also barks incessently at our older dog when they’re outside together; we can’t let them both out at the same time.

I have two pugs… They sit on top of the couch to look out the living room window… [I know... they shouldn't be on the furniture.. that is another problem]… anyways.. they bark when people walk by.. they bark at night when I get up to get a drink.. they bark when they are in the yard and see someone… or if people come to the door, but they do stop once they get their required attention… the one also barks when he sees dogs on tv… he likes to watch tv LOL..

  65. Frank Meade Says:

Joannie, our year old Australian Shepherd, barks at cats (but only at night), at two little dogs next door (who like to taunt her because she can’t get to them) and at the deer herd that comes by twice a day. It is her barking at the deer that is most worriesome. The young fawns quickly learned that Joannie cannot get to them due to a seven foot fence so they have made a game of the problem. They will gather along the fence, paw the ground and drive the dog crazy. You have to remember that it was her barking that sets up the game and if she didn’t bark initially the deer would continue on their feeding path. We would like to break barking at the deer.

When door bell rings, knock at door, outside noise, cats do something they don’t like (dogs are in create at this time), or when they are in there crate or in a room alone for more than a couple of minutes. These are the things that cause one dog to bark, and if he does it long enough the other joins in. When door bell rings, or knock at door, I can get them to go into there crates with a command, and sometimes they stop barking. When the barking stops the whinning begings. I usualy keep the crate doors open, and let in the person. Then I give the oaky command and play goal tender to keep them of my guest. They don’t attack, they jump up and sniff. Help!

  67. Darla Says:

This is my only problem, but my 8pound Bichon has enraged an eccentric neighbor to the point of having the animal control authorities visit a couple of times. She sits in the window watching for the cats across the street, children going to school or the daily walks of other dogs on the block. She’ll go into intense barking, dashing from window to window of the street-facing rooms, and then bolting through her doggy door to bark at the fence. When I give her the quiet command she quits barking, sits down and nervously wiggles until I release her. What can I do for HER to be responsible and not start the barking routine?

Our German Shepherd is only 6 months old. We’re trying to get off on the right path. There is a large dog that lives in the backyard that borders our back yard. They bark at each other. Any tips on how to get our dog to stop barking. Currently, when the duo start I call our dog and bring her in the house, however, as she matures we want to leave her in the backyard when we are away.

I have 2 terrier mixes and they bark at noises; the cats who live here with them; people and other dogs while outside, my spouse when he returns home or leaves. I have used a pop tin with pepples, shake it when they start but I would like them not to start! They are both adopted from rescue places and spent their first year with abuse and very little positive attention. Most issues have been resolved but this one!

Our shi-tzu barks when people come to the door. She sounds like she is a ferocious animal so I hold her harness while people enter. She’ll stop if I pick her up but continues growling. She also barks a lot when she is in the car and we’re in a parking lot waiting. I roll up the window immediately and then roll it back down when she quiets down. sometimes helps for the moment.

I have a yorkie that barks mainly in the morning when she wakes up and heres us moving around. Her pen is about 8 feet in length and 4 feet wide. Mostly she barks when she is in her pen and she wants out to be with us. She goes to work with me during the week and on the weekends and evenings she gets plenty of time to run around outside. This drives my husband CRAZY…..

  74. Rhonda Says:

I have an eight-year-old terrier mix that barks every morning starting at 5:15 – 5:30. She and our other two dogs stay in crates in the kitchen on the first floor and we sleep on the 2nd floor. She will bark until we come downstairs. We have tried to wait her out, but eventually we need to get up as well. If I stand in front of her crate and tell her to be quiet, she will and then I open the door, but she got what she wanted, us downstairs. For about 6 months we put a crate in our bedroom for her. This stopped the barking, but at 5:15 she began a high pitched crying through her nose. That was enough to drive us crazy as well. She is now back downstairs with the other two dogs.
Aside from the morning barking, she does an “alert” bark any time we move from the couch or a chair and every time she hears a door, inside or outside. We can accept this level of barking, if we can get the 5 a.m. barking to stop.

I cannot control the barking she completely ignores me. If you could help with this that would be great.

My little Sheltie is pretty good about barking until a stranger comes over. This is pretty common, but she continues to bark even when I tell her to stop.

Our last Sheltie used to bark anytime there were noises that hurt his ears, the vacuum, trucks driving by, fireworks especially. Which leads me to another question – is there anything to use in place of sedation when july 4th comes around?

We have a 4 year old male Shih Zhu/Poodle cross. He barks & howls at all sirens (police, fire, ambulance etc). /when in the yard he runs up & down the fence line barking at anyone going by. He barks when people come to the door which is the worst. We have used the spray bark collar (only effective when on & when on he continually paces). We have said no, used the pinch collar & given him corrective tugs, we have tried to get his attention onto something else like sit & stay. None of it has worked. He is very stubborn & tries to be the dominant one in the household. He loves car rides but now barks at people & dogs he sees as we drive down the street. Don’t know how to stop this annoying behavior.

I have a little min pin (4 years old) and she barks all the time. I have tried positive training (giving her a little treat to distract her when she barks), a citronella collar, and time outs, none have worked. When I let her outside in the early AM or the late PM, she runs around the entire backyard and barks all along the fence. Once she finishes her rounds, she barks for another minute and then stops. When someone rings the door bell and comes inside, she barks like crazy. How can I stop these behaviors? Thanks for your help.

I´ve just got a beautiful border collie, she is 8 months old, she all ready had a competition and passed. The only problem I have is that she barks every time to my neighbor´s kids when they are playing in their yard. (from mine you can see the neighbor´s). She also barks when my kids jump in the tombling, she runs under the tombling chasing my kids trying to play with them from there barking and barking. I persume that the solution would be putting a lease on her and punishing her every time she tries to do that.

I have a 10 month old 5 lb Maltipoo who barks at everything but expecially everytime my husband comes into the room or up the stairs. She wants to play with him but first she barks her head off. It seems like a protective measure and is very annoying. She barks at everyone we pass on our walks and at shadows, doorbells etc. How do I teach her not to bark?

  82. Kathy Says:

I have a 1yr old mini schnauzer and a 6 mo old westie. The schnauzer barks at other dogs. My neighbors have 3 dogs who bark all the time and mine will go out and bark at them. She also barks if she hears another dog bark even if she can’t see them. The westie barks mostly at stuff she doesn’t know what it is such as the vacuum (off) hides when it’s on and other things that she doesn’t understand yet. She also barks when my son-in-law plays with his 19 mo old daughter, but I think she is scared more than anything else because sometimes she pees too. I tell them no barks and the schnauzer knows what it means, but sometimes still does until I make here come in the house.

  83. Melody Says:

I have three dogs: Two (a male and a female) nine month old mixed breed (spaniel/lab/spinx/?) pups from the same litter and a male 5-year old schipperke. The schipperke was adopted about a year ago and the pups were adopted 6 months ago. We have a small back yard and share a fence with a family that has 2 adult labs that stay in the yard 100% of the time. The neighbor dogs have always been well mannered and only bark on occasion at noises. My dogs are indoor/outdoor dogs – mostly indoor. The pups go out for play time. They play well together but sometime the play gets a little aggressive. At some point when they are outside the male pup inevitably gets into an aggressive barking match with one (or both) of the labs on the other side of the fence. I tell him to “knock it off” and after the barking stops bring both pups in the house. It ends up happening every time the pups go out. I am as concerned about the aggression he is exhibiting as much as I am about the barking that may annoy my neighbors and cause problems. I have been working on the clicker training for about three months with both pups and with varying progress. The attention spans are still very short and trying to train both dogs at the same time is time consuming. When he gets into that aggressive bark mode, he does not want to listen to me and he makes me very nervous. He has twice jumped the schipperke while in this mode. Other times the three dogs get along fine. Not sure if this problem is a barking problem or an aggression problem, but the only time he seems to exhibit aggression is when he gets in that bark mode.

Have a two year old Blue Tick Coonhound who barks at everyone who goes by our fenced in corner yard. Also, on walks, barks at all dogs, up on her hind legs, the whole show. Have resorted to putting a buzz collar on her and haven’t heard a peep out of her since; it took one initial shock for her to get it. There must be a better way to correct the behavior.

We have two toy poodles( one is 4 and the other is 3).
When we are driving in the car and stop at an outdoor parking lot (grocery store

have locked and left the car to go to the store. We have tried using the bark
collars that have a high frequency and a muzzle. Neither of these two ideas worked.

    My Dog Barks:
-at other dogs all the time.
-when someone is walking past my house.
    -when cars go by.
-and cries when I go to work and doesn’t stop for hours. :(

She just barks at everything – period.

  93. Sandy Rozelman Says:

I don’t have a problem with my dog barking but I have a simple solution. Teach your dog to bark on command and you will be able to stop him from barking on command as well. When he barks say “Bark”. When he stops say “Stop Barking” Then reward with a treat. Soon it will become a trick for your dog and he will listen to the command and wait for his treat – either a goodie or some love. It works for me.

I have 4 dogs. A chihuahua/shih zhu (15) black Lab(5) pitbull/chow(10) and a siberian husky(2) they all bark at everything. The chihuahua/shih zhu is a indoor dog. He will bark at someone coming to the door if a car is going down the street when I fix his food and other things also. I can’t remember all the things he bark at. The other dogs, which are outside, will bark at everything they see. At times we say that they bark at their own shadows. The outside dogs keep me up at night barking so much. We have said no. We have tried pinch collars and we have also tried the e-collar nothing seems to have worked. We don’t know how to stop this behavior.

I have 2 dogs ; a 1 year old male Papillon and a 5 year old female Dachshund. They are mostly well behaved dogs.
When they play and get overexcited I say sshhh and put my finger over my lips and they stop barking.
Patty, the Dachshund is very friendly with all small animals but barks at and tries to attack very large dogs even in the house. She will not stop until they are separated. It is embarassing when we go visiting The big dogs ignore her but I am afraid that one day she is going to get hurt. I adopted her a year ago so I have no past history on her behavior.
They both bark frantically when someone comes to the door, they hear a dog bark, see another dog, anybody walks past, or they hear a noise outside. They ignore my sshhh signal. I can only leave them out long enough to pee.

  97. Allan Blizzard Says:

One thing I forgot. This is the worst so I don’t know how I forgot it. When in the car, our poodle is fine—until I turn on my left turn signal. He begins barking until he sees we’re not stopping. If we do stop, he jumps into the back seat, barking, then dives into the drivers seat with fangs bared, barking like crazy. When I open the door, he slams into my back with all his force, still barking. He doesn’t try to get out of the car, but will bite me, (not hard) if I reach back into the car for anything. When I get out of sight, he settles down and lays on the console. When I return, he barks until I get in.

  98. Karen Says:

We have 3 Border Terriers, one of which starts a high-pitched barking whenever we slow to park our vehicle. This, in turn, starts the other 2 barking and any attempts to distract them (with treats, etc) are futile. They then continue barking while we are exiting the vehicle and walking away or unloading them for a walk or to enter the house. If we are taking them for a walk, the one who starts the barking gets out of the vehicle (still barking) and starts grabbing the leashes of the other 2 and shaking them in his mouth. And the barking continues……until we get going on our walk.

  99. Kathryn Says:

I have a 17 month old Lab. He is quite hyper all of the time but is lovely and relaxed when indoors. He goes crazy barking at any dogs, people, cats, umbrellas…etc that pass the house and garden when he is out and about. It also continues when I ‘try’ to bring him for a walk..which is another story. He pulls the arms out of me. But he wil go crazy at any other dog he sees. In all fairness he doesn’t bark at people when we are walking….which is great! But his constant barking in the garden is driving me crazy and I’m afraid of upsetting my neighbours!

The dogs bark in the morning to be let out of the kennel boxes. They also bark when I get home from Work also to get out of the kennel boxes. The younger dog barks at me to get me to chase him. A game my husband and children taught him when younger. I tried to put a stop to it the first time I saw the game but did not succeed. The younger dog is a Pembrook Welsh Corgi he also tries to bite shoes to get you to play chase. The older dog a 10 year old mini dachshund, is mostly blind and does not get along with the younger one. They have to be kept separate or blood happens….(not good) I can only let one dog out at a time. The Corgi shows signs of stress ( yawning, trembling) when I let him out after he has been barking. The Dachshund barks when the Corgi gets going. They are kenneled side by side in the utility room. It used to be that the older dog started the fights, But now the younger one attacks the blind older dog.

We’ve adopted a one year old, female, mini-schnauzer. She is truly a great dog and is so very affectionate, a real people dog. My wife and I work so we leave her by herself all day in the bathroom. It’s quite large and airy and she has access to food, water and of course, her toys.
When we leave in the morning she barks and howls which sounds just pitiful but there’s nothing we can do. When we get home, she cannot contain herself and lavishes us with so much love it’s a joy to come home. What can we do to pacify her? We’ve talked about getting another dog for company but keeping one dog with vet visits and medical maintenance is pricy enough. We would love some suggestions. She’s loving but willful. We feel we were extremely lucky to find her.

I try to watch the tv show, its the dog or me, to get tips on training, every time a dog barks, so does mine, so I can’t watch shows with dogs. He barks when he sees someone walk by the apt through the closed blinds, I don’t dare open them. He really goes nuts, at my very young neighbor who like to play his music very louad, he runs up and down the hall really barking. This is hard living in an apt., and I am moving in a couple of weeks to a handicappe complex, and when I went to visit it, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, what will they do with my tiny? Maybe it being so quiet, so will he, hope you can help us, because we are a pair. My case worker, asked me if I could give him away, and I looked at her like she was crazy and said no, this is like my baby.

    G’day,
I’ve adopted a Bishon/PoodleX. Like a bloody rooster first thing in the morning when its eyes open wooowooowooo bloody woo. A bird flyes past, my other dog looks at it, the phone rings, i pick up a cup, a car drives past, the local school bell rings, any body walking past, the moon, a shadow, and i think when it remembers something. will drop, sit, heal, stay (outa sight any length of time), come, roll over, shake hands. trying desperately to love her but it also so random, and apparently indiscriminate and just when you thinks its safe. WOOWOOWOO WOO. What do you reckon?

I have a Silkie and like the yorkie an the boxer above, he barks at everything and jumps too. He also barks to get attention. I also have a terrier who is starting to pick up the Silkie’s bad habits. He barks when someone comes in. He barks in the back yard when he hears the neighbors. He barks at door bells. He barks at the cats he has known for a couple of years. The barking at the cats only started after I got the Terrier. The Silkie also barks at large dogs when we take him out. I have tried rewarding him when he is quiet, and turning my back on him when he barks, but he gets in the swing of things and can’t seem to stop. I would appreciate any help in this area.

Hello I have an Australian Blue Heeler. She barks for two reasons, the first at anyone going past the back gate (with or without a dog) and secondly when taking her for a walk, if she can’t see a dog behind a fence she goes nuts, barking and pulling on the lead etc. She is not so bad when she can see the dog, it is mainly when she can hear them but not see them.

Any suggestions on fixing, particularly the walk barking would be appreciated.

My little 2 years old Jack Russell Terrier + Maltese barks at everything. birds, flies, bees, children’s voice, etc. Whenever we give him a joy ride in the car he will bark at the people walking along the street, dogs… I wonder how am I going to stop him from doing that. Sometimes I will use my finger to put on my mouth to say”Shhhhhh..” then he will stop for a while. He is a very lovable, smart little dog which can sing as we give him some tune and when my friends call on the phone he will listen when they call his name, he will “yap, yap…” as if he is having a conversation with them. He is just a gorgeous little creature!! We all love him very much especially my hubby.

I have 2 pom’s. Male and Female. The female will bark at any one that walks by the house or if she hears a dog bark on the tv or when we leave the house or car (with them in it). So far I have tried the muzzle, stop barking collar, distracting her, calling her 5 to 6 times, the water bottle, the news paper and stomping my foot down. So far nothing has worked and my loving neighbours are now complaining about the barking.

I have a miniature schnauzer that’s 4 years old and a mix min pin jack russell that’s 2 years old. I got them last year at the SPCA so I didn’t raise them. The mix didn’t bark at all, but the schnauser showed him how… So, they bark when someone knocks at the door, my children arrive from school or if they hear or see something out of the usual ex. acar that stops in front of the house or people passing. The mix doesn’t bark a lot, 3 or 4 barks but they are so sudden that it surprises everyone particularly the schnauser. He is very vocal. He barks and growls a lot. I mean really a lot. Even when we pat him, he growls. You can see he takes plesure of being pat but stills growls. Now we know him but at first he was a bit scary. I put him in his cage when he barks and won’t stop, then he calms down. When I’m aware of a situation will arrive I prevent the barking by making them lie down and keeping them down, but the schnauser stills growls. I’d like some suggestions. Thanks

To stop my 5 month old Border Collie from barking at dogs who are in their yards as we take walks I keep kibble in my pocket and when they bark at her I feed her kibble as we walk past them. She is much more interested in the kibble than the other dogs. She now associates walking past barking dogs with getting treats and ignores them completely.

Wow, I read a lot of people’s barking problems and it seems we all have the same problem. I have such a busy life, and include the dogs as much as possible. I really need to walk them more, but the barking at everything in sight is quite unnerving. They sit on the back of the couch as my little sentinels on patrol, barking…I tried to move the furniture away from the window but my apartement is very small and can’t arrange it anyway else without it looking awkward. They bark at walkers and gardeners especially when they come up to window, I can understand that. Birds, other dogs, kids running. Funny thing, they calm down after the mailman is there for a few minutes. The apartment mailboxes are right out front of our door. The little poodle will bark and mouth people while I am talking to them. They think he is trying to bite, but he never does, just mouth them. The papillion is friendly, but barks at motorcycles, bike riders and noisy trucks and cars, especially when we are walking.

My puppy barks whenever we put her in her cage for punishment or whenever we eat dinner. She comes and begs at the table. How can i stop this??

  119. Tony Torreano Says:

We have two Min-Pins that basically are not frantic barkers but when someone new comes to visit they will bark continuosly regardless what we try to do. We tell people to ignore them and eventually they stop. they are great pets, but are very independent which is another way of saying they do not listen unless you are calling them to dinner.

My dachshund barks when he hears the garage door open, the doorbell ring, the front door opens, and any time any one comes in the house or my bedroom. He also barks at other dogs when we go on walks. I have to use a citronella bark collar when we go on walks just so he will behave.

  122. Henry Smith Says:

Asha is 1 year old and her barking problem is annoying to the neighbors. When I let her out to fed her and don’t let her in right away she runs from fence to fence and continues to bark. We’ve tried the barking collars, spray and muzzler and none of these seems to work. The barking collar works sometimes. She wants you to give her a treat to get her in the house, if not she will run from you and continue to bark or I have to sit ouside with her. The barking is a constant thing when she is outside, and the neighbors can’t go in their yard without her barking non-stop.

I have a 4yr.old Pom/Chi, and our problem is he barks whenever someone is coming in the door, going out the door or just being by the front door like the mailperson or paperperson is making a delivery, also when we go out and have to leave him home alone. We try holding him and reasuring him but he still barks and wakes up my grandson at nightime and nap time.

A barking dog is the only problem I have and when I first glanced over your whole training program I knew it wasn’t what I wanted but when I tried to rescind my order I was unable to do so. You can be rest assured I will not be buying anything more from you.

I have 5 dogs – the oldest and smallest is a 9 year old Maltese, and he makes the loudest noise! Whenever I arrive home, or anyone else arrives, I seriously thin of having his voice box removed! He has now taught the other 4 to start doing the same thing. Drives me dilly.

  127. Ans Peeters Says:

We have a 4 month old Dobbermann and since 3 weeks she is barking a lot. She barks when we are having our breakfast or dinner. Probably she wants a lot of attention. Also if we ignore her, she continues barking.
Also if other people are coming she starts barking and does not stop, when we say her to stop. I think barking is ok if strangers are entering our land, because we have her to alert us of people not allowed to come into the premises, but she has to know when to stop. If you can give us some help and support how to control this, we will be very happy.
    Thanks a lot,
    Ans

Its understandable but I cant get he be quiet until he either leaves or she comes in the house. Also this is not exactly Barking but she kind of growls at night when she wants something. Its pretty loud and it makes my daughter crazy. We put in the other room, but I feel bad because I know she has no idea why she is being sent out of the room. Please help I have to have her watched by sister soon and she will freak out if my dog makes noises all the time.

Hi, my 1 year old Jack Russell called Mulligan is driving us (and our neighbours) absolutely crazy with his continuous barking (my husband wants me to find another home for him). He will go outside and just start barking and barking – sometimes I don’t even know if he knows what he is barking at! On advice from the vet we had him spade, about 5-6 weeks ago – no improvement. he also suggested to spray him with citronella oil mixed in water – this does help a bit, but I am not always around when he barks. I also have a 5 year old Jack Russell called Divot – sometimes Mulligan sets him off and they both bark and “cry” together. Going for a drive to the vet is a nightmare, because Divot barks at every dog that we pass, until we arrive at the vet. He also hates the sound of a motorbike (actually any very loud noise). We live on a golf estate with no fencing around our house, so it is very difficult to keep them inside all day. PLEASE help me to get Mulligan (and Divot) to stop barking!

  133. Karen Harkins Says:

We have a 3 year old miniature poodle who barks loudly when she is in the car and we come to a parking lot. She does not like to be left in the car. We have tried taking her out for a little walk, which calms her down, but she starts barking again when put back in the car.
We have also tried stopping the car, firmly stating “Quiet” or “Stop” which she will do, but then start up if left for even a short time. We have tried not to leave her in the car whenever possible, and if necessary we buckle her harness with the seatbelt (it is made for the seatbelt to strap through the top), but the last time we did that, she was out of the harness loose in the car when we came back, and the harness was still buckled to the seatbelt!

  134. Bea Says:

My dog loves the sound of his own bark. The most common times he barks are whenever there is a knock at the door (or doorbell), when my brother and his dog get home and also whenever he is looking for attention.

My seven month old chocolate lab barks to get a treat and get your attention to play with her. I had read the way to get a dog to stop barking was firs to teach them to bark. Well that worked. But how do I get her not to bark. She gets a lot of exercise and play time.

  139. Pete Says:

Our dog, Yellow lab X Dane, (read: Big guy) is a wonderful, playful, loving, goofy, adorable dog. BUT when he is in the yard, he runs to the gate, with his hair all up and an awful menacing bark at anyone, from a little kid to neighbors a few houses down. Anyone moving. I feel horrible, as sometimes people yell back at him, and he is a good boy, just bossy. He doesn’t growl, just bark his head off. We call and he comes in, but I would so much rather he just look at people. Are we asking too much? I would feel so upset if someone made a complaint, I would be so embarrassed.

that passes with an owner. Even barks when I approach her to feed her. She barks very loudly in fact for hours at any and everything. I have tried to tell her no, stop, using one word syllables but nothing seems to help. We live in a very quiet neighborhood. It is just a mater of time beore I get a citation from the homeowners association.
