Re. "Gentle" Ben - Shari's e-mail. I am horrified that any shelter can passs on a dog like this to someone with another small dog, let alone young children! They should have checked the dog's behaviour out thoroughly in all kinds of situations with a muzzle on him before even considering rehoming him to anybody, especially if they were unaware of why he had ended up in the shelter in the first place.

He clearly is a dangerous dog and not to be trusted. He needs to be rehomed to someone experienced in dealing with such dogs who is willing to keep him muzzled whenever he comes into contact with either people / children or other dogs / animals.

It is heart-breaking for Shari and for her other little dog, but she must steel herself to do the only safe thing for her children and other people's dogs/ animals and ultimately for Ben, as otherwise there will be more trouble in store and he will end up being euthanased anyway.

It is not difficult to find a really gentle dog, even from a shelter, but PLEASE do NOT go back to the same one! And ensure you check that the dog has been properly assessed by an experienced dog behaviourist. There is usually a good reason why the dog did not remain in his/her original home and you need to make sure you find out the genuine reason before taking any other dog on.
Wishing you all the best in your search for the right dog for your situation.
God Bless

Great article! So much information on what is such an important topic! I recently bought a dog crate to crate train my 3 year old dog who was tearing my blinds down when I left home for work during the day. He was getting so frantic that he would try and jump out the windows and in the process pull all of my expensive blinds down! It took a while but I can honestly say that buying a crate and teaching my dog to use it was the best investment I ever made. Now everyday when i come home from work he is well behaved and waiting for me in his crate. I found heaps of good crate training information at http://petdogcrates.com --- hopefully this info can help some others. Thanks again for the great article!

GREAT ARTICLE!! My dog is a 19 month old female Mini Schnauzer who used to bark at just about everything. (She came from a family of "barkers"), but that didn't stop me from purchasing my little 'Angel' from the Breeder. I have Crate trained & Potty trained her from the day I brought her home @ 7 weeks. Those two things came easy for her, however "Leash Walking" and "Controlling the Barking" proved to be a bit more difficult. I am currently taking your 8-week Emotion Training Course, and doing the Homework. I have to say, she (we) are getting it. On our daily walks and visits out in public places, she has drastically curtailed her barking. When we are walking and the leash tightens I stop and take my step backwards and wait, and she will come around me and we proceed. The first day I did this we must have stopped approximately 20 - 25 times, then with each passing day...less & less. We just got back from a 2.5 mile walk, and only had to stop approximately 3-4 times...she's getting it. We are still having a little difficulty being quiet at home whenever the doorbell rings, but are working on it. She knows what going to her mat means, and she knows to sit for petting, and we continue to work on the "Quiet". I have instructed my guests to turn their backs and ignore her until she is quiet. Thanks again for ALL the great and very useful suggestions. The examples are very helpful putting it all into perspective.
