Dog Obedience Training Blog
If you’re interested in dog potty training tips and techniques, then you’re going to like this interview I recently did with Amanda Brothers of SideKickDogTraining.com
A lot of you complained about not being able to download the .mp3 file of my last interview, so I decided to keep it simple and just use the audio player below. As long as you have flash installed on your computer you should be able to play this.
Enjoy!
Chet Womach
P.S. I will not be leaving this recording up for long… it turned out so good that I will be adding it to my “Hands Off” dog training course within the next few days. So if you’re interested in listening to it for free, don’t wait too long
And again…

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 10:41My dog is a rescue and was at least a year old and had(has) bad potty manners. I can’t seem to break her of #2 in the house. This may help. Guess it’s back to the crate for her until she does it right. She’s also afraid of a leash.

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 10:45I am concerned that I have my 2 Shiz sues and they are 2 years old. They have a dog run on a patio and they think it’s okay to potty in there at any time. Even if I take them out every hour or so to let them go on the lawn. I tried crate training for 2 to 3 weeks at a time a number of times but they don’t seem to get it. So I am afraid to let them stay in the house when I am gone. We just got an RV so they could go places with us and I want to let them stay out of there Crates when I go away from the RV. Is it a bad idea to have them in a Kennal area.
Thanks for any help that you can give me.

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 11:04Hi,
I subscribed to your stuff in February (I think). I have a great dog that I rescued from a shelter. Part yellow lab part golden retreiver. He has been very anxious since day one. I left him at home one Sunday morning when I went to church. He severly damaged the door and trim, as well as salavating enough to create a large mess on the floor.
I’ve been keeping him near me most of the time since. He did some damage to my pickup when I left him in there for about 20 minutes. Since then he has gotten much better and I’m able to leave him in the car whenever I go shopping or whatever. He has stayed in there for over 2 hours without a problem.
I have a deck with stairs that go down to a cement patio and a small fenced area with grass. When I’m home, he tend to like being out there, but wants the door open so he can go in and out as he wants. I’ve tried leaving him out there at times, but he has clawed the door and trim, and destsroyed the screen. He never even scratches at the closed door when I’m home. Any suggestions?

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 11:56Amanda Brothers said a book was good to read from a female author, about the dog and human likes and differants. What is the name of the book and the author? Hope you can help me, to get a hold of the name of the book. Sound’s like it was a very good book to read. Thanks
I enjoyed the information about potty training very much.

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 12:11This is a great way to learn to train your dog. I thank you for the chance to here this. We all have to learn from our dogs and to put it to use.

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 13:09Heard the entire discourse on Expert Dog Potty Training and was duly impressed with everything Amanda had to say. Your interview with her brought forth answers to many of my concerns. My greatest mistakes have been my own impatience as well as assuming my puppy understands my thoughts and desires. I need to “train” myself and my own actions to be able to produce the desired results from my puppy.

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 16:20I would have liked to hear info on house training a puppy that is extremely submissive…I have a 6 month old and she always lays on her back and pees as you talk to her or try to pick her up…we have tried to ignore her so she will not lay down and turn over also we leave her and our 3 year old male in the kitchen and she will poop or pee and she will have just gone out and done her business. What can I do about that? it seems so cruel to keep her in her crate whenever we are out of the kitchen. Can you suggest. ps: neither one of the dogs will let us know when they have to go outside, we just take them outside every two hours of so. Thank you

@ July 23rd, 2008 at 16:36I learned nothing from her. If I knew nothing like what a dog is she may be helpful. But my brain works I felt your training was better than hers.

@ July 24th, 2008 at 17:59I just clicked on the play button, heard everything fine. I liked this better because I don’t have an MP3. Good advice but what do I do if I’ve already done everything wrong? My puppy is a year old, I got her at two months old and let her have the run of the house too soon. I used training pads and praised her when she used it but she thinks its okay to go there even if there is no pad. ( I quit using them months ago.) If I catch her in the act and pick her up she drops her fecas on the way to the door or she clams up and won’t go at all. She does go outside often and I’ve praised her for that too. She will sometimes go for days with no accidents and I think this time she’s trained but alas! no. What can I do.

@ July 27th, 2008 at 19:02I hear everything extremely well, just a push of the play button. This interview makes sense, exactly the way I trained my black russian terrier, she is fully potty trained at 3 mths and tells me every time she wants to go out by smacking her paw against my blind at the sliding door – you do not want to know what the blind looks like !!! but then if you see the size of the paws – no wonder !!!!! she is the best companion ever !!!!!! Like anything, what you put in is what you get out!!!!!

@ July 28th, 2008 at 11:31My rescue puppy is now 12 months old came from death row. She joined my papillion who was almost perfectly trained (she is also starting to learn bad habits). She is a great joy, loves you to pieces. She has almost mastered going out to the balcony where it is allowed to do her business. I only have problems when it is raining. She tries to be good and hides it inside. We have a large apartment and that makes it harder!
Thanks for the advice on not to use nappies.I never used a leash inside that is an interesting thought that I will try.

i would also love to buy your traning method, if i get instruction in writing or with video.

@ July 30th, 2008 at 07:25The interview with Amanda Brothers was OK. I think Chet does just fine on his own. My issue is trying to train two puppies at once (sisters). We got them at 3 months old (2 months ago). They don’t like to be separated and won’t go out for my husband, unless I’m not home. How do I get them to be away from each other without whimpering so I can work with one at a time? They are good girls, they just need to be taught a signal to go out and work with refining a few other things. They also need to not keep looking for “Mom” when “Dad” is perfectly capable of taking care of them. He wants to work with them playing fetch and would like to get into frisbee with them. (We used to have an awesome frisbee dog many years ago.) Thanks!

@ August 4th, 2008 at 11:35Thanks for the (mostly) positive feedback about the interview, and I am very glad to hear that it will be helpful to those of you out there who are housetraining a dog or puppy.
I believe the book I recommended was “The Culture Clash” by Jean Donaldson. It’s fantastic.
Other resources can be found on my web site, under Recommended Resources. There is lots of good info that addresses some of the other questions that were asked.
Happy training!

@ October 18th, 2008 at 07:07Hello,
My dog has never had a chewing problem, she is now 14 months old and I believe that ” I FINALLY GOT IT” she has many many SQUEEKY toys that she loves, I truly believe that this is the reason why she has never chewed up anything even the things that she can reach such as phone, wires, rug fringe, shoes, the only other things she loves to chew is paper.. so my slant on this is, she has an abundance of toys that she loves…potty training is the worst thing, we are both confused..
