Decades later, Vietnam War dogs are remembered

By JESSICA RAVITZ, CNN, Feb 18, 2010

Maybe it was the sound of the wind cutting through the wire. Perhaps he caught a small vibration with his keen eyes. Or it could have been a slight difference in the air’s smell.

Whatever it was, when Sarge noticed that his Marine Corps handler, Fred Dorr, was creeping down the wrong path in the Vietnam jungle, the German shepherd did something he’d never done out in the field: He looked at Dorr and barked, before taking a seat.

“When he sat down, I knew there was a trip wire. I was one step away from it,” remembered Dorr, who with his dog in 1969 was “walking point,” leading the way for a dozen soldiers. Had the hidden explosive device been tripped, “It would have gotten half of us.”

Read about this adorable breed, also known as the “Butterfly” dog.

Papillon Temperament

The Papillon is a very intelligent toy dog that is quick to learn and eager to please. These dogs excel in obedience and agility training. These dogs make excellent companion dogs and family pets. Although elegant and graceful, the Papillon also has plenty of energy and loves to play. These small dogs have bags of personality and character, and also have plenty of stamina and enthusiasm for everything they do. An excellent tracker dog, the Papillon loves to work and also enjoys getting involved with family activities and fun. This is not a breed for those that do not have the time to dedicate to interacting with their pets. The Papillon is an alert dog with plenty of spirit, and is an ideal choice for active owners. These intelligent and keen dogs make obedience training easy and fun, although owners will need to exercise assertiveness and confidence in order to try and combat the Papillon’s bossy and possessive streak. He is a quick learner and easy to train, making him ideal for the more inexperienced dog owner as well as for those with experience. However, he can be difficult to housebreak.

Behavior Changes in an Older Dog

February 20th, 2010 by Chet

The effects of aging often bring on fears of Alzheimer’s disease in humans.  But our aging dogs can display some behavior changes as well.  Always contact your veterinarian to determine if these changes require medical attention, or whether they are just a normal part of your dog’s aging process.

Old dog behavior changes

Senior dogs get Alzheimers too!

Owners of geriatric dogs often call their veterinarian office concerned about their dog’s recent behavior changes. They may report that their dog may wake up in the middle of the night and start howling. Others may report their very well house-trained dog gets up and has accidents around the house or wakes up to drink and then shortly after urinates on the carpet.

I know about these instances as I have personally often taken these calls.

I recall particularly, an owner one day calling concerned about her dog because he started wandering around the home at night bumping into furniture and hardly recognizing her. He would then sleep for most of the day undisturbed. The owner was unable to sleep properly and was very concerned by this recent worrisome behavior. Afterward, the dog also changed behavior, from an outgoing dog he became an overly submissive and timid fellow. Read the rest of this entry »

Doggy Flatulence

February 19th, 2010 by Chet

We’ve all been there.  You are relaxing in your easy chair and your furry companion wants to cozy up for a petting session or just settle into your lap for a nap, when all of the sudden, you are engulfed with an aroma that is beyond unpleasant, it’s downright disgusting!

Dog Gas:  What Causes Doggy Flatulence … and What Can You do About It?

posted 2/17/10, www.sixwise.com

Does your dog have problems with flatulence that can easily clear a room? It’s nothing personal … just a normal process that occurs when bacteria in your dog’s digestive tract breaks down his food.

However, while some gas is normal, excessive flatulence can be a sign that something is amiss in your dog’s diet.

What’s Causing Your Dog’s Gas?

As in humans, flatulence in dogs is often related to the foods they eat.

It occurs when a food does not get completely broken down in the stomach and small intestine. The food then reaches the large intestine in this undigested state, and bacteria there get to work, essentially breaking the morsel down further.

Read more about this wonderful breed.

Boxer Temperament

The Boxer is a dog that is very good natured, and has plenty of affection, devotion, and love to give to his family. This is a dog that is friendly and playful, and craves attention – but has plenty of attention to give too. For those looking for a dog with bags of energy and a real people lover, the Boxer is the perfect choice. The energy levels of the Boxer do start to calm as he grows older, but this does not affect his playful and loving nature. At the same time the Boxer manages to be very dignified and steady. Some boxers can be headstrong and even animated in the way that they act, and their protective nature and love of their family makes them effective watchdogs.

Learn more about the Weimaraner Vorstehhund.

Weimaraner Temperament

The Weimaraner is a very strong minder, independent, and energetic dog, with bags so stamina. These large dogs have boundless energy, and need to be in a household that is active, as well as with people that have plenty of time and devotion to dedicate to a pet. Thee dogs do not like to be confined or neglected, and this can lead to boredom, frustration, and destructive behavior. These dogs need early socialization, consistent training, and a confident, assertive owner with some experience of dog ownership and training. The Weimaraner will delight in taking part in a range of outdoors activities with his owner, and is the ideal companion for those that enjoy outdoor recreation. Although the Weimaraner can be very strong willed, which can make training a challenge, he is also highly intelligent and responsive with the right trainer. Some Weimaraners can be difficult to housebreak.
