Train A Dog To Learn The Three Basic Commands Quickly And Easily

Sit, stay and come seem simple enough but when you begin to train them, can quickly become difficult tasks for the smartest of dogs to master, unless you have the right tools.  With the right tools, a clicker and some solid expert advice, you have the ability to quickly and easily train a dog to do just about anything.

#1  Train a dog to sit

Before you begin training, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself so that you have a consistent training plan and optimal behavior in mind.  How will you cue the command?  Will you give your dog a verbal cue or a physical cue?  How long should the sit last? Do you want the dog to sit in front of you or just to sit where he stands no matter where you are?

You will want to determine the purpose of the behavior, when you’re going to use it and how you’re going to use it.  For example, do you want to use the behavior when company comes over or when you’re walking down the street?  It is important to make these decisions before you begin training so that you train the behavior appropriately.

Using your clicker, begin training the behavior exactly as you want.  For every step of progress towards your end goal, make sure that you click and reward.  In the beginning this may mean he gets a click and reward for simply bending his back legs and thinking about sitting – this is important when you train a dog.  The steps may be slow however chances are that once he ‘gets it,’ he won’t forget it.  Once you have your dog performing the exact behavior it is time to add your cue. Practice the behavior on cue, click and reward until the behavior is perfect – this means that if you want your dog to sit when guests knock on the door, you’re going to have to practice it in those environments.  Make it a game you’re your children, friends, or other family members and have them knock on the door a few times.

#2  Train a dog to stay

Again, like you did with the sit command, make sure you understand exactly what you expect from your dog before you train this command.  Once that is decided you can begin clicker training.  If you want to train a dog to stay in a specific location, use a boundary like a rug or mat.  It is easier for your dog to understand staying within a boundary rather than not moving period.

If you want your dog to stay in a specific location even when you’re out of the room, train the time he stays in the location before you train a dog to stay in a location that is far away from you.  You’re going to have to add distance between you and the dog gradually so it is easier to have a dog understand the behavior first.  Of course with any trick the key is to start small.  Don’t expect your dog to stay for five minutes, or even one minute.  A few seconds the first time is a great success.  Click and reward.

#3  Train a dog to come

Honestly, your dog already knows when to come.  What you want to train them do to is come on cue.  A word or sound like a whistle is a great cue easily recognized by your dog.  Like sit and stay once you have the behavior trained, add the cue and shape the behavior until it is perfect and predictable.

Sit, stay, and come are three basic behaviors that all dogs must know however, you can train a dog to do just about anything.  For more information on clicker training dogs to do amazing tricks, to eliminate undesirable behaviors, and the value of positive reinforcement, visit the experts at www.thedogtrainingsecret.com or click here and sign up for free video lessons for training dogs
